WaterVation was hired by CORE Consultants to provide stream restoration plans for 2,400 feet of Industrial Tributary through the new Millers Landing Development in Castle Rock, Colorado. This project begins at Plum Creek Parkway and terminates at the interface with the Town of Castle Rock project on Industrial Tributary. A natural channel design approach was developed to balance the needs of the commercial development and sustainability of Industrial Tributary. The channel morphology was designed using reference reach data for ephemeral stream systems and validated with detailed sediment transport modeling. Low-gradient riffle structures and bio-engineered channel bank treatments were designed to provide stream stability for low flow events. Channel stabilization and flood control for large flood events was provided by strategically locating grouted boulder structures and buried structures.
For this project, WaterVation prepared a hydrologic study to revise the existing FHAD hydrology for Industrial Tributary. The new peak flow data was used in the support of a Floodplain Modification Study for the Town of Castle Rock to address the floodplain permitting for the stream restoration project. As part of the hydrology revisions, the stream stabilization design was streamlined and optimized for cost savings while following stringent Castle Rock criteria. Challenges successfully navigated on this project include shifting priorities due to development changes and rapid changes to the project schedule.
